North Carolina is searching for a new head football coach. The Tar Heels have reportedly interviewed one of the greatest coaches of all time as they go through the process. Bill Belichick has interviewed for the North Carolina football job, according to Inside Carolina.

Belichick coached the New England Patriots from 2000-2023, leading the Patriots to six Super Bowl championships. The 72-year-old has never coached college football before but was obviously incredibly successful in the NFL.

Whether it be Belichick or someone else, North Carolina is searching for a replacement for Mack Brown, who was fired last month after his second stint leading the Tar Heels program.

Brown went 44-33 the past six seasons at North Carolina. Former NFL head coach Freddie Kitchens is serving as the interim head coach as UNC searches for a replacement.

While it is impossible to ignore the resume of Bill Belichick, it is fair to question what kind of fit he would be at North Carolina.

The Tar Heels just recently fired a 73-year-old coach and would be replacing him with another coaching legend in his 70s. Belichick would also have to navigate NIL and the transfer portal, which is something he has never done before.

Another potential issue would be opposing coaches using Belichick’s age against him, after all, Mack Brown said that was happening regularly with him.

Brown recently addressed his departure as the North Carolina head coach.

“I told the kids I’m sure they’ll get a great coach,” Mack Brown said. “He’ll have a better situation than we did with NIL because of revenue sharing. We had about four million dollars. He’s going to have at least twelve. So it’ll be three, four times much more money for the kids. So that should really help them.

“People have asked about transfers. We signed 26 kids two years ago and not one of them got a penny. So all of them came out of high school here because they wanted to be here. So I don’t see them transferring.

“Now, money is different. We lost three or four recruits at the end this year just in the last two or three weeks because they got paid. We ask them and they said, ‘I got paid’. So, I mean, I got it. That’s the other reason that I think it’s a great time for me to get out. This isn’t the game that I signed up for. It has changed so much.”
