North Carolina tight end Jake Johnson plans to enter NCAA Transfer Portal
Jake Johnson is moving on from Chapel Hill. The former Texas A&M tight end will move the North Carolina Tar Heels into his past, as he’s planning to enter the NCAA Transfer Portal, On3 has learned.
Johnson played in 17 games across two seasons with the Aggies, totaling 25 catches for 237 yards and four touchdowns. During his two subsequent seasons with North Carolina, he accumulated 18 receptions for 165 yards and one touchdown.
He followed his brother in quarterback Max Johnson from College Station to Chapel Hill. Now, the duo will look to find their next home, and one has to wonder if they’ll move on together once again.
Johnson played high school football at Oconee County (Bogart, GA), where he was a four-star prospect. He was the No. 74 overall recruit in the 2022 cycle, according to the Rivals Industry Ranking, a weighted algorithm that complies all major recruiting media services.

More on Jake Johnson, North Carolina Tar Heels
North Carolina just finished wrapped up its first season under coach Bill Belichick, finishing with a 4-8 record. Johnson will officially be able to enter the transfer portal when it opens on Jan. 2. The portal will be open for a two-week period, closing on Jan. 16.
It will be interesting to see how many more North Carolina players follow suit and enter the transfer portal along with Jake Johnson. Not only was it a disappointing first year for Belichick, but there’s also been rumblings that some NFL teams could have interest in extending him a job offer.

With the 73-year-old coach’s future in Chapel Hill somewhat murky, the offseason roster changes will certainly be worth keeping an eye on. As for Johnson, he’ll now be on his third team in and hoping to make more of an impact.
Meanwhile, 15-day transfer portal this offseason will be the only window, a change from previous years. The NCAA opted to eliminate the spring transfer portal window for football, meaning this will be the only opportunity for student athletes to enter their names.
The move to a one-time-only portal is supposed to allow schools to finish their season with their entire team before the transfer portal opens. As has been the previous standard, athletes on College Football Playoff teams still playing would have 5 days beginning the day after their team’s final game to enter the transfer portal.
This season’s CFP semifinals are set for Jan. 8 and 9. The CFP national championship game is scheduled for Jan. 19 at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida.
