The Dean Dome was sent into pandemonium in the final second of Saturday’s classic between Duke and North Carolina. Seth Trimble hit what turned into a game-winning shot from three, coming in the corner right in front of the UNC bench. But while the celebrations began in Chapel Hill, officials went to the monitor to review the play.

In the meantime, fans decided to storm the court. But after looking at the monitor, it was determined that 0.4 seconds remained in the game. North Carolina had to completely clear the court and get fans back into their seats. Announcements began to come from the PA announcer.

Eventually, everybody not related to the game was back in the stands. Duke got one final opportunity to tie the game, heaving the ball down to their end. Nothing came of the moment as the final buzzer officially went off. Chaos broke out again with thousands of people spilling back onto the court.

It’s a massive victory for Hubert Davis and North Carolina, one they needed over the program’s arch-rival. Getting there just took a little bit longer than expected and produced two court storms. You can check out the full moment here.

Winning this game likely keeps North Carolina in the race for the ACC regular season championship. They move to 7-3 in conference play. Duke falls out of sole possession of first place, instead being tied with Clemson at 10-1.

Jon Scheyer voices displeasuere with North Carolina court storm

North Carolina storming the court did not take too long to get brought up during Jon Scheyer‘s press conference. He took some time to voice his displeasure with how things played out. Scheyer gave a ton of credit to North Carolina for how they played before hitting his main point that some better safety protocols should be involved.

“For me, it’s hard to talk about the game when I was most concerned for the safety of our players after the game,” Scheyer said. “I don’t want to make it about that, because Carolina played a great game to win. That’s a heartbreaking loss for our team.

“You know, I got staff members that got punched in the face. My family had people pushing away, trying to not get trampled. That’s not what this game is about. You give them all the credit in the world. It’s not about the game, but obviously that was a scary ending that this rivalry is not about.”
