On3 Consensus four-star offensive tackle Aamil Wagner of Dayton (Ohio) Wayne announced his commitment to Notre Dame on Thursday, choosing the Fighting Irish over Kentucky, Ohio State, Penn State and Maryland.

The 6-foot-6, 265-pounder said that everything about Notre Dame was perfect for him. The decision is considered somewhat of a recruiting upset, as most had projected Wagner to commit to Kentucky.

“I chose Notre Dame because of the trifecta,” Aamil Wagner said. “They preach upon God, academics, and football, and those three things struck to the core for me.”

“Other than Stanford, Notre Dame probably has the best education in college football. Plus, going there also gives me a chance to compete at a high level. Notre Dame has made the playoffs twice and playing that competition will help me get ready for the league.”

Offensive line production at Notre Dame second to none

“Notre Dame is known to produce talent, especially at my position,” Aamil Wagner said. “Out of the six offensive tackles drafted, five were taken in the first and the other in the second round. Getting on the field there, especially at tackle, gives a good chance to make it to the next level.”

Religion very important to Aamil Wagner

“I grew up in church, so religion has always been a part of my life,” Aamil Wagner said. “Getting a chance to go to a school that preaches so much religion. Having a relationship with God means a lot, because I know I will be accepted in that culture already.”

Strong relationship with coaches

“I’m really close with the offensive line coach (Jeff) Quinn,” Aamil Wagner said. “I think he did a great job of establishing this relationship with me. He was the only coach that wanted to sit down with me and my parents. He not only offered me but also my family. From that point on, our relationship is where I can call him anytime and talk about anything.”

“Along with him I have a really good relationship with coach (Marcus) Freeman and coach (Mike) Mickens, both went to my high school. Having that relationship with them and being from the same high school has allowed us to connect.”

Aamil Wagner is the Fighting Irish’s fourth commitment along the offensive line in the class of 2022. He’ll join Ty Chan, Joey Tanona and Ashton Craig in Notre Dame’s Top top-10 class in the On3 Consensus Team Recruiting Ranking.
