Quarterback Jack Coan exploded onto the scene in his first game as the quarterback of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish Sunday night, carving up the Florida State secondary for 366 passing yards and four touchdowns, while tossing one interception.

It was a sparkling debut for Coan, who transferred to Notre Dame from Wisconsin and threw for the most yards in a Notre Dame season opener in the history of the school, according to ESPN Stats and Info.

Jack Coan Instant Reaction

Coan gave his instant reaction following Notre Dame’s Jonathan Doerer drilling the winning kick in overtime.

“Just an unbelievable kick,” Coan said following the game to Katie George. “Just an unbelievable night here. Winning on the road is always tough and it’s just so special to come out with a victory.”

The talented signal-caller was overjoyed with the fresh feeling of suiting up for the Fighting Irish.

“Yeah, it’s unbelievable,” he said. “It doesn’t even feel real to be wearing this jersey with this group of guys around me like this. I mean, it’s just a dream come true. You know, you dream of playing in places like this. This is just an iconic place and to get a win like this is just amazing.”

Dropping Dimes

Coan was throwing dime after repeated dime tonight for the Fighting Irish. It was one of the more impressive debuts so far in the 2021 college football season. Check out this 37-yard strike to his receiver, Kevin Austin, Jr.

What an absolutely gorgeous toss by Coan. He also started the game off with this beautiful toss to a wide-open Michael Mayer, who took it in for a 41-yard touchdown.

Coan’s experience at Wisconsin

At Wisconsin, Coan was 12-6 in 18 starts. Coan did not play last season due to a foot injury. He did see success as the full-time starter in 2019. That year, Coan led the Big Ten with a 69.9 completion percentage. He also threw for 2,727 yards, 22 total touchdowns and five interceptions. Coan led Wisconsin to the Rose Bowl.

Winning Kick

Here’s the video footage of the 41-yard game winner by Notre Dame’s Jonathan Doerer. The Irish staved off a heart-stopping 18-point comeback by the Florida State Seminoles.

Tonight, Doerer was two of two in his field goal attempts, the longest of which was a 48-yarder that he drilled. He made all five of his extra points.
