For the first time in Kevin Corrigan’s career, he’s a national champion. The Notre Dame lacrosse coach won his first title Monday as the Fighting Irish knocked off Duke in a 13-8 thriller in Philadelphia.

Plenty of Notre Dame coaches reached out to Corrigan to show their support — including head football coach Marcus Freeman, who was in attendance.

Freeman took to Twitter to congratulate Corrigan on bringing home his first championship. They took a picture together on the field afterward, and Freeman noted it’s time for Corrigan to add another hat to his collection.

“CONGRATS ON THE NATTY!!!!” Freeman tweeted. “It’s time for a new hat Coach Corrigan!!!”

Freeman wasn’t just in the stands for the national championship, though. He also took in Notre Dame’s Final Four victory over Virginia and took a postgame picture with Brian Tevlin, whose overtime goal sent the Fighting Irish to the championship game.

In addition to Freeman, new Notre Dame men’s basketball coach Micah Shrewsberry also congratulated Corrigan and the Fighting Irish after the title game win.

“Congrats to Coach Corrigan & @NDlacrosse!” Shrewsberry tweeted, along with a few emojis.

Notre Dame took an early 6-1 lead, but Duke came all the way back to tie things up at 7-7 in the third quarter. But the Fighting Irish fought off the charge, taking an 8-7 lead. They never looked back.

It was an extra special moment for Chris and Pat Kavanaugh, who combined for four points en route to the win. Chris Kavanaugh had the biggest day with two goals, but Pat added an assist despite dealing with a hamstring injury.

“It means everything,” Chris Kavanagh said afterward, via On3 and Blue and Gold’s Tyler Horka. “We’ve been through so much together. Unspeakable things. This it it. This is the dream come true. I couldn’t have done it without his support. I mean, look around. To do it with your [freaking] brother, it means everything.”

As for Corrigan, he joked he wasn’t sure he wanted to re-watch the championship victory over Duke considering the craziness of the game — outside of maybe some plays from the first half. But he made sure to take in the moment as the Irish celebrated on the field.

“I’m not sure I want to watch the film of this one, other than maybe the defense from the first half,” Corrigan said, via the Associated Press. “You wait your whole career to see this right now.”
