From Chicago to South Bend.

Cam Williams, one of the top 2024 prospects in Illinois has committed to Notre Dame.

The No. 76 prospect in the On3 Consensus had around 20 offers, but he chose the Irish over Cincinnati and Michigan.

“Being there for Irish Invasion really did it,” Williams told On3. “It just felt right. When you know, you know. A few days after the Irish Invasion, I made the decision. I know Notre Dame is the place for me.”

Before the Irish Invasion, Notre Dame was in Williams’ top five publicly. Quietly, they were in his top three. The 6-foot-2, 175-pound rising junior out of Glen Ellyn (Ill.) Glenbard South has visited South Bend three times and he knows that is where he wants to be.

“I just felt it. The campus is great, I love the culture, the vibe fits me, and it is a great setting to be in.

“Notre Dame is a special place with a special culture and it is the place for me. All the schools on my list are great, but Notre Dame is different. Notre Dame is where I want to be.”

Williams is a believer in Marcus Freeman

It is Marcus Freeman’s team now. He is the leader in South Bend and there is a new energy around the program.

Williams is excited about the future.

“I love coach Freeman,” Williams said. “We have had some good talks and I love who he is. What people see in coach Freeman is who he is. He is real. He is down to earth. Coach Freeman is a coach I can’t wait to play for.

“After getting to know coach Freeman and getting to be around him more, I know he is a guy players will want to play even harder for. Coach Freeman is a special coach at a special place.”

Stuckey and Williams are building a bond

Chansi Stuckey came in to coach wide receivers back in January. He left Baylor for South Bend and he and Williams are clicking.

“I met coach Stuckey briefly when I visited early in the spring and I thought he was an awesome dude,” Williams said. “Part of me going back for the full day around the Irish Invasion was to spend more time with him.

“We spent a lot of together and we just clicked. That day with him added another aspect to how I was feeling about Notre Dame.”

It was not all off-the-field stuff with Stuckey. The two worked together during the camp as well.

“Coach Stuckey has that mix of energy and chill. On the field, he has high intensity, and I like that. He is a great teacher. I got to work with him and watch him coach others. He puts great attention on details and that stood out a lot.

“That day was big for us. We have a good relationship going and we are building on that.”

CJ Carr played a role in Williams’ decision

Williams made his own decision. He and those close to him talked this out, met the Notre Dame coaches, and made the decision in the end. But, CJ Carr’s commitment to Notre Dame over Michigan and others made an impact.

CJ Carr committing to Notre Dame made a huge influence on my decision,” Williams said. “When he told me he was committing to Notre Dame, it is definitely something I took into account.

“We had talked before we were together at Irish Invasion, so we already knew each other. Our relationships now has grown stronger.

“It was a quick click for us on and off the field. We worked together on the field with on-air routes and one-on-ones and it went great. Playing with a quarterback like CJ is going to be great.

“For me and him, it will be a great future at a special place.”

Williams made a 40 year decision

Williams had plenty of options to consider. He put a lot of thought into his future and he liked different things about different schools on his list. He loves the culture on campus and the people he will be around at Notre Dame, but he knows the value of the education offered there too.

“Life after football was big for me in this decision,” Williams said. “It was a 40 year decision. Notre Dame is a top school with a top football program, but the doors it can open up for me and others after graduating was big too.

“Education is big to me, so knowing what Notre Dame can do was something I had to consider. The degree played a role in this commitment.”
