George Washington III, a 6-foot-2 combo guard out of Louisville (Ky.) Christian Academy has committed to Ohio State basketball for the class of 2023, a source told On3.

Washington is starting off the 2023 class strong as the Buckeyes’ first commitment. Ohio State is bringing in a loaded 2022 class that features five commits, four of which are top 100 prospects. Bruce Thorton, Felix Okpara, Roddy Gayle Jr., Brice Sensabaugh, and Bowen Harman make up the 2022 class.

Washington also received scholarship offers from Tennessee, Arkansas, Cincinnati, Auburn, Louisville, amongst others.

Fun fact: Ohio State was Washington’s first official offer.

George Washington on the Buckeyes

“They contacted me pretty early,” Washington told The Columbus Dispatch late last month. “I love coach (Ryan) Pedon and coach (Chris) Holtmann. They’re both great guys. They were my second visit and first offer. I love the coaches there, the campus. It’s a great school.”

The Ohio State Buckeyes offered Washington after an unofficial visit in mid-June. Over this past weekend, Washington returned to Columbus this time for an official visit. Evidently, the visit sealed the deal for Holtmann and Co.

Washington’s high school coach, Aaron Hill also spoke to The Columbus Dispatch in a previous interview. “I think a lot of the high-major schools I’ve been talking to, including coach Holt and Pedon, they see ‘G’ being able just to be a great basketball player that they will need to have on the court,” Hill said. “Whether that’s having him play the 1 or the 2, it depends on what the other (personnel is) going to be. They really feel like he can be on the court with multiple lineups, and that’s how I see it too.”

A year ago Washington was unknown

George Washington III was unknown and unranked until this summer when he burst onto the scene. Flash forward to today, Washington is ranked 42nd nationally and the No. 9 combo guard in the 2022 class, according to the On3 consensus rankings.

As a sophomore, Washington averaged around 24 points per game and shot 93% from the free-throw line.
