Ohio State again loses plenty talent to the 2022 NFL Draft as it prepares for the next season, including some veteran edge rushers who will have their role filled by the latest five-star prospects to enter the building. With a former five-star edge rusher entering his senior year with hopes of becoming a first-round pick, the future remains bright.

During a media session last week, new defensive coordinator Jim Knowles addressed his takeaways from watching Zach Harrison throughout the spring, setting high expectations for the season.

“I love Zach’s attitude, his length,” said Knowles. “I saw a lot of domination at the point of attack. A guy who really holds point. And he’s got a great personality, great energy. And he’s going to be a great leader for us.”

Over three seasons, Harrison has played in 27 games for the Buckeyes. He has 63 career tackles with 7.5 sacks and five pass deflections. He has also added one forced fumble and one fumble recovery.

Harrison came to Ohio State as a five-star prospect in the 2019 class. Before waiting his turn behind several stars, he ranked as the No.7 overall player in the On3 Consensus. The Ohio native also ranked No. 1 in the state and No. 2 among edge rushers.

In addition to Zach Harrison, Jim Knowles was also asked about former five-star defensive edge rushers Jack Sawyer and JT Tuimoloau. He started with a response on his expectations for Sawyer next season.

“Everything, I expect Jack to be able to do everything,” said Knowles. “To be able to play any of the defensive ends’ positions, to be able to play our Jack position, to learn the system well enough to move into that Leo role. I think he’s got great potential. I like his attitude, I like his toughness, so I just expect him to continue the work he did in the spring and be great.

Jim Knowles immediately received the same question aimed at JT Tuimoloau and took the opportunity to speak on Jack Sawyer in addition to him as a unit. Coming in to watch the duo over the past several months, the new coordinator sees big things in their future.

“Everything,” said Knowles. “These are two guys that do not have limitations. They do not have limitations. And it’s my job to grow them, to put them into the different positions to succeed, to be able to utilize those skills to the fullest. But there’s no limits on their success.”
