Urban Meyer coached running back Ezekiel Elliott during the 2014 and 2015 seasons at Ohio State. They were part of the 14-1 team in 2014 that won a national championship. Shelley Meyer, Urban’s wife, shared a throwback picture on Thursday of Meyer and Elliott during the 2014 season.

The 2014 season was arguably the best of Elliott’s collegiate career. The star running back rushed for 1,878 yards and 18 touchdowns, averaging 6.9 yards per carry. In his Buckeyes career, Elliott totaled 4,410 yards from scrimmage with 44 touchdowns. Ohio State’s 14 wins was also the highest total in Meyer’s head coaching career.

Elliott, Meyer are both off to slow starts in the new NFL season

Elliott came into the NFL and immediately made a major impact on the Dallas Cowboys offense. In three of his first four seasons, Elliott had at least 1,357 yards rushing. The last two seasons have been a little bit of a step back for Elliott. He averaged just four yards per carry and 65.3 yards per game last season, both being career lows. Elliott had just 33 yards on 11 carries in the Cowboys season opener.

Meyer was hired to become the new head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars in the offseason. Reports have emerged that Meyer might already be “overwhelmed” in the NFL. The Jaguars went up against the Houston Texans during week one. Houston was expected to be one of the NFL’s worst teams, but they came in and dominated the Jaguars, handing Meyer a 37-14 loss to begin his NFL coaching career.

Meyer and Elliott have shown to be dominant in their respective careers at the collegiate level. Elliott has shown to be capable of being one of the NFL’s best running backs. So far this season, both individuals have left the football with more questions than reasons for optimism.

The Jaguars have their first home game on Sunday against the 1-0 Denver Broncos. Meyer will get the chance to turn things around, but he will have to do so against a Broncos team that looked pretty good during week one. Elliott and the Cowboys must travel to Los Angeles on Sunday to take on the 1-0 Chargers.
