Ohio State enters the 2022 season with an established starting quarterback in CJ Stroud. However, behind him there could be a battle for the backup job between returning holder Kyle McCord and five-star freshman Devin Brown.

During preparation for the spring game, head coach Ryan Day explained what he wants to see from Kyle McCord and Devin Brown as they lead the offense during Saturday’s scrimmage.

“To just make the routine plays routinely and run the offense,” said Day. “You don’t have to do anything extraordinary. We’re not going to see a lot of crazy blitz or anything like that. It’s not going to be a challenge schematically, it’s just going to be a matter of getting the snap, making the right read, delivering the football, handing the ball off, reading the right guy and just managing the game. And being able to do that or not, locate the football, make the right reads in that type of environment where you’ve got probably more than half the stadium filled and it’s going to feel like a game.

“So you get an opportunity to see how they do with live bullets going on. Now they’re not getting tackled, but still, you get a feel for who’s moving the offense. You don’t need to do much more than make the routine plays routinely, especially with the players that we have.”

Ryan Day’s message to Buckeyes fans

Saturday’s spring game will be important for Ohio State on many levels. The Buckeyes are looking to showcase their progress through the spring so far. Last year, Ohio State went 11-2 overall and 8-1 against Big Ten opponents. The Buckeyes defeated Utah in the Rose Bowl to wrap up a good season.

“Hey Buckeye nation, looking forward to our spring game on Saturday. Hope to see a great crowd there,” Day said. “We’re very, very excited about this game, opportunity to see the 2022 Buckeyes in action. Looks like the weather is supposed to be really good. We got a bunch of people in town, recruits, former players. There will be a fan fest, we are going to recognize some of the former players during the game and going to have a really great halftime performance from our band.”

In addition to on the field progress, Ohio State will be honoring former quarterback Dwayne Haskins at the spring game. Haskins passed away last week after being struck by a vehicle, and his importance to the Buckeyes program is something that will not soon be forgotten.
