Bob Stoops started his interim coaching tenure by making a visit to Broken Arrow (Okla.) four-star safety and Oklahoma commit Robert Spears-Jennings.

Stoops made the visit with inside wide receivers coach and co-offensive coordinator Cale Gundy, cornerbacks coach Roy Manning and recruiting analyst Courtney Viney.

Spears-Jennings is the No. 356 overall recruit in the country, according to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

Stoops told the media Monday that he was going to be hitting the recruiting trail in his interim role to help secure the Sooners recruiting class.

“It’s an easy sell,” Stoops said. “You sell the university. You sell the leadership here that is in front of you. You sell the history of success. Not just in the last 23 years, decades of success. And it is going to continue to happen. We’ve got great leadership, great facilities, a great university to recruit to academically. All of it together is still here.”

Six players have decommitted from the Sooners since Lincoln Riley left for USC, including Los Alamitos (Calif.) Five-Star Plus+ quarterback Malachi Nelson.

Riley was also going on an in-person visit Monday night, spending his first night in Los Angeles at the home of Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei athlete and longtime Sooners commit Raleek Brown.

New USC receivers coach Dennis Simmons joined Riley for the visit.

Brown posted “Staying home?” with the eyeballs emoji on Twitter soon after news of Riley’s departure for USC was announced.

Spears-Jennings also posted on Twitter following the news, but his post was much more somber. He tweeted just “wow…”
