In October, when Gentry Williams committed to Oklahoma, he did commit to Oklahoma. But he also committed to Lincoln Riley.

Brent Venables is the leader in Norman now and Williams couldn’t be happier.

“I am definitely staying home and staying with Oklahoma,” Williams told On3. “I had to take that official visit to make sure. It was a new staff, the culture changed, and I had to make sure.

“After that visit, I was done. I left Oklahoma knowing I was on the same page as coach Venables, coach Roof, coach Hall, coach Bates, and the entire staff.

“I know without any doubts that I still want to be at Oklahoma.”

Venables quickly checked on Williams as soon as he took over the job. He was on the phone with the No. 76 prospect in the On3 Consensus, he was in to see him, and after the time with Venables on the visit, all questioned were answered.

“It is just a different mentality under coach Venables. He has that energy. I love coach Riley too, but that energy coach Venbales has is different.

“Coach Venables is defensive-minded, he has that passion, and players want to run through a brick wall for him.

“I want coach Venables to be my leader.”

Williams grew up following the Sooners. The No. 1 prospect in Oklahoma dreamed about playing in Norman. He now gets to do that.

“I remember I was in awe of everything as a freshman and now I am signing with Oklahoma. This has all been a blur and I am so thankful to my family and God.

“Oklahoma is where I want to be. I would got there with or without football. It’s like a dream coming true.”
