Brent Venables waxed poetic regarding quarterback Nick Evers in his National Signing Day press conference. The four-star quarterback decided to lock-in his commitment to the Sooners, and it’s evident Venables believes Oklahoma got a special player.

“Obviously, leaned on him for who is the guy, and why is he the guy,” Venables started, speaking on the insight from offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby. “It was important to me — making sure that we find the right kind of guy that had some maturity to him. Had a really good support system that’s going to help him navigate his journey. Some level-headedness — knowing that what you are as a freshman is going to look a lot different than what you are in three or four years. Just like when he was a freshman in high school and he’s thirteen or fourteen years old — it’s a lot different than when he left at eighteen.

“The natural maturation that’s going to take place. Whether it be knowledge, maturity, decision-making, physicality, skill — all those things are developed. So finding the right guy that fit there too. Not just a talented player that could come in and help us be a quality player at that position — I think looking for in totality, being the total package. Man, did he find one.”

Evidently, Venables is pleased with the job Lebby did in courting Evers to Oklahoma. While Caleb Williams may be the unquestioned starter at the moment, Venables believes the Sooners have a bright future at the position.

Venables on Evers: ‘Everything’s still sitting in-front of him.’

Furthermore, Venables was convinced about Evers for a bevy of reasons. Moreover, the Oklahoma coach spoke about the four-star recruit’s family, as well as the holes the Sooners had at the position.

“They’re amazing people,” Venables stated, speaking about Evers’ family. “The more that ya’ll are able to be around them and their family, the more you’re going to see what we’re talking about. I don’t know how we got to that point — whether it’s Chandler Morris was here and leaving created a void as well. And certainly the quarterback that went to South Carolina did, as well. I thought that Jeff and the staff did a great job of identifying not only a very talented one, but a great one when it comes to the total package.

“So, they leaned on me just a little bit to have their blessing for who it was. But immediately after visiting with and his family, just tremendous humility. Incredibly talented — but tremendous, tremendous humility. Character, education. His Dad’s a Harvard grad. The real brains of operation is his Mama, Mrs. Monica. Just a wonderful family.”

Finally, Venables couldn’t contain his excitement. To finish, the Sooners leader elaborated on what makes Evers great.

“Tremendous discipline. Natural leader. Connected from coast to coast. Kids love him — easy to follow. Just a great athlete. He’s just scratching the surface,” stated Venables. “Got length. He’s got speed, he’s got arm talent. Very accurate player, and everything’s still sitting in-front of him.”

As you can see, Brent Venables believes the future of Oklahoma football is secure in the hands of Nick Evers.
