Four-star safety Makari Vickers of Tallahassee (Fla.) Robert F Munroe Day School announced his commitment to Oklahoma Friday night.

The 6-foot-1, 190 pounder chose the Sooners over Alabama and Michigan.

Vickers on why he chose Oklahoma

“The overall vibes,” Vickers said. “  enjoy the presence of all the staff and players, and just the vibe of campus. Plus who wouldn’t wanna get coached by one of the greatest defensive minds in college football? Coach V’s resume speaks for itself with the things he accomplished at Clemson and one of the best corner coaches in college with coach Valai.”

Relationship with coaching staff stood out

“I am closest with Coach Valai and coach Roof,” Vickers said. “They will be the main two coaching me up in the secondary. We have conversations mainly about just life. We still have football conversations, but most of them are about how life is going and just catching up and what my plans would be once I get on campus.”

Oklahoma’s plan for Vickers

“The coaches were telling me that they will be losing a lot of their secondary my freshman year, so I could jump in and make an impact at any position in the secondary,” Vickers said. “They said they would start me at Corner but would also get a lot of reps at Nickel and Safety because of my versatility.”

The sunshine state wide receiver joins coach Venables and the Sooners’ Top 10 class in the 2023 team rankings alongside Jackson Arnold and others.

Makari Vickers Scouting Summary

“Well-rounded safety prospect with athleticism and ball skills. Has a good combination of size and speed,” On3’s Director of Scouting Charles Power wrote. “Measured at 6-foot-1, 190 pounds as a junior. Was a state finalist in the 100 meters as a junior, running a 10.89 second mark. Plays all over the field for his high school, making plays as a safety, receiver and return man. Instinctive and makes plays on the ball in coverage. Can come down with contested grabs. A form tackler who finishes with physicality. Shows his athleticism when the ball is in his hands. Does not play tough competition. Lacks some length for the position. Younger for the cycle, turning 17 years-old in May of his junior year.”

Vickers currently ranks as the No. 87 Player in the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that accounts for all four major recruiting services. He also tabs in at the No. 8 safety, and the No.17 player in the state of Florida.
