Count Oklahoma‘s top commit Gabriel Brownlow-Dindy among the many people surprised by Lincoln Riley’s decision to leave Norman, Okla., for USC.

The five-star defensive lineman out of Lakeland, Fla., told On3’s Hayes Fawcett during an Instagram Live on Monday that he didn’t like how the situation the played out.

“I was pretty surprised about what happened,” Brownlow-Dindy said. “It was his decision. I just don’t like how he left because he kind of left a whole bunch of 17 year olds, 18 year olds to fend for themselves after the pitch that he made and all that type of stuff. He has a whole bunch of players scrambling around trying to find other schools and not knowing with what’s going to happen for the future of Oklahoma is crazy.”

Brownlow-Dindy is the No. 6 overall player in the county, according to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

He is the top defensive lineman in the country, according to On3, and the No. 3 prospect in the 2022 On300.

The only five-star committed to Oklahoma, he is the prize jewel of the Sooners recruiting class.

But that recruiting class is shrinking. Six players — three from the 2022 cycle and three from the 2023 cycle — have decommitted from Oklahoma since Sunday.

The three players to decommit from the 2023 class are Orange (Texas) West-Orange Stark four-star interior offensive lineman Demetrius Hunter, Baltimore (Md.) St. Frances Academy four-star defensive lineman Derrick Moore and Lubbock (Texas) Lubbock-Cooper four-star linebacker Kobie McKinzie.

Brownlow-Dindy told Fawcett that former Oklahoma defensive coordinator Alex Grinch leaving for the Trojans does put a wrench in his plans. But he plans on waiting before making any decisions

“It does kind of effect some stuff,” Brownlow-Dindy said of Grinch leaving. “I’m just letting stuff play out over the next week.”
