Consider the questions about whether Brent Venables can recruit at Oklahoma answered. Following a red-hot July, the Sooners added their fourth blue-chip prospect in the month of August on Friday night when Tallahassee (Fla.) Robert F. Munroe Day School four-star safety Makari Vickers announced for OU. He marked the Sooners’ second commitment of the day following Converse (Texas) Judson four-star wide receiver Anthony Evans.

Vickers is the No. 87 overall prospect and No. 8 safety in the 2023 On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He is also the No. 17 player in Florida.

With his commitment, the Sooners have leapfrogged LSU into the No. 6 spot in the 2023 On3 Consensus Team Recruiting Rankings.

Makari Vickers bolsters loaded class for Oklahoma

With Vickers in the fold, Oklahoma’s 2023 class now includes a total of 22 prospects. The group features two five-stars, 12 four stars and eight three-stars.

Vickers is Oklahoma’s sixth top-100 recruit. The others are Denton (Tex.) five-star quarterback Jackson Arnold, Kansas City (Mo.) five-star EDGE Adepoju Adebawore, Houston (Tex.) four-star wide receiver Jaquaize Pettaway, Mustang (Okla.) four-star athlete Jacobe Johnson and Lee’s Summit (Mo.) four-star offensive tackle Cayden Green.

The Sooners started the summer outside the top 25 of the On3 Consensus Team Recruiting Rankings. However, head coach Brent Venables and his staff have put together one of the nation’s best recruiting classes over the past few months.

This month alone, Oklahoma has landed commitments from Vickers, Evans, Johnson and Austin (Texas) Westlake four-star EDGE Colton Vasek. Johnson, Vasek and Vickers are all top-200 prospects.

It was the Sooners’ recruiting wins in July that really got the ball rolling, though.  Oklahoma notched pledges from Adebawore, Pettaway, Green, Kissimmee (Fla.) Osceola four-star defensive lineman Derrick LeBlanc, Tampa (Fla.) Tampa Catholic four-star linebacker Lewis Carter, Spanaway (Wash.) Spanaway Lake four-star cornerback Jasiah Wagoner, Charlotte (N.C.) West Charlotte four-star running back Daylan Smothers, Westfield (N.J.) Hun School three-star offensive tackle Logan Howland and Perkasie (Penn.) Pennridge three-star linebacker Phil Picciotti.

The program also found success on the recruiting trail in June. They earned commitments from Crandall (Tex.) four-star linebacker Samuel Omosigho, Tallahassee (Fla.) James Rickards four-star wide receiver Keyon Brown, Denton (Tex.) Ryan four-star running back Kalib Hicks, Snoqualmie (Wash.) Mount Si three-star offensive tackle Heath Ozaeta and Fremont (Neb.) Archbishop Bergan three-star linebacker Kade McIntyre.
