The Oklahoma Sooners are in line for one of the most impressive first-time-ever feats in college athletics. Earlier in the summer, the Sooners softball team concluded their title defense by beating the Texas Longhorns in the Women’s College World Series. And if the men can take down the Ole Miss Rebels in the finals, it will mark the first time ever that a program has won both the men’s and women’s College World Series in the same year. Ahead of the Sooners epic matchup against the Rebels, head baseball coach Skip Johnson commented on Oklahoma’s possibility of making more history.

“Well, that’s what University of Oklahoma is known about. There’s only one. We talk about that, and Patty has done a great job,” said Johnson. “She reminds me of Coach Garrido, and just being around her and her presence has been incredible.”

“If we get the opportunity to do the same thing, we’re here. If it happens, that’s great, If it doesn’t happen, what are we going to do, go fishing? That’s the way I look at it. Go recruiting.”

The Sooners softball team dominated for the second straight season thanks to the coaching of Patty Gasso and arguably the greatest slugger in Sooners history, Jocelyn Alo. Oklahoma went 59-3 on the season and 17-1 in the Big 12. And that dominance continued at the women’s College World Series in Omaha, OK. The Sooners lost just one game against the No. 5 ranked UCLA Bruins. Not to mention, of the 10 WCWS wins they had, all, except one, were victories of five runs or greater.

Johnson reveals pitching plan for CWS Final

The Oklahoma Sooners head baseball coach Skip Johnson was short and to the point regarding questions on his pitching rotation for the College World Series Championship. The Sooners will take on one of the surprise teams of this year’s college baseball postseason, the Ole Miss Rebels. What will not be a surprise come game one is who will be on the mound for Oklahoma.

“Jake Bennett,” said Johnson when asked who his game one starter would be. Johnson answered the question so quickly that he unintentionally bypassed the first part of the question, ‘what is the importance of the first game?’

“No, Jake Bennett will throw first and then Horton on Saturday, and then we’ll figure it out on Sunday — or Monday.”

Oklahoma is another surprise team of this year’s College World Series thanks to Johnson’s coaching. The Sooners came on late in the season and got hot at the right time, winning the Big 12 conference tournament before heading into their regional bracket in Gainesville, FL. There Oklahoma would upset the No. 13 team in the nation, the Florida Gators, before beating the No. 4 team Virginia Tech in the Super Regional Round. From there, the Sooners would go on to beat a pair of their heated rivals, the Texas A&M Aggies and Texas Longhorns, in their College World Series bracket. Next up for them is their last and final quest, defeating another red hot team in Ole Miss.
