Jacobe Johnson is staying home.

The Mustang (Okla.) athlete and top-40 prospect in the On300 rankings announced on Saturday that he has committed to Oklahoma over finalists Alabama, Michigan, Oklahoma State and Stanford.

The 6-foot-3, 185-pounder, who stars both in basketball and football for Mustang, projects to be a contributor at either defensive back or receiver at the next level. He checks in as the No. 85 overall prospect in the 2023 On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

On3 is slightly higher on him than other services though, as shown by the Industry Comparison. In the most recent release of the 2023 On300, he was tabbed as the country’s No. 39 overall prospect and No. 2 athlete.

Johnson took official visits to four of his five finalists, seeing Oklahoma, Michigan, Alabama and Stanford during the month of June. It was the Sooners though, who offered him all the way back in 2020, that came out on top. That was in no small part due to new head coach Brent Venables, whose culture Johnson raved about earlier this spring to On3’s Gerry Hamilton.

“I like the whole program, every coach over there. It’s just different over there as far as the culture. I like all the coaches, and I feel like I fit right in over there. They weren’t just talking about football; they were talking about life and school. It’s a priority. They want to win championships but they want to get you right for life.”

He is the second commitment from inside the state of Oklahoma this cycle for the Sooners and their 20th in total. With him in the fold, OU moves up to No. 7 nationally in the 2023 On3 Consensus Team Recruiting Rankings.
