Mike Gundy made a bold claim about Spencer Sanders, stating he could go down as the best quarterback in Oklahoma State history.

The Cowboys have had a bevy of fantastic quarterbacks in their history, so Gundy’s praise is massive for Sanders. Joining Joel Klatt on Breaking the Huddle, the Oklahoma State coach explained why Sanders is special.

“He’s so mature now. He’s mastered our offense. So there’s very few times that we give him a play and he doesn’t get the ball into the hands of who it needs to get into. When that happens, you’re going to have success,” stated Gundy. “He just understands what to do with the football. Our offense is very simple, except for the quarterback. Quarterback’s very difficult. Once you master that and you get it, we can roll on offense. We’ve been very proud of him. He’s been a competitor and a fighter.

“He’s going to go down as arguably the best quarterback in the history here. I think he’s going to play in the NFL someday.”

Thus far in 2022, Sanders has lived up to Gundy’s billing, passing for 1,097 passing yards and 11 touchdowns to two interceptions. Additionally, the quarterback has run for 185 rushing yards and four rushing touchdowns on 41 attempts.

Over his four seasons with the Cowboys, Sanders has amassed 8,008 passing yards, 61 passing touchdowns and completed 62.9% of his passes. Continuing, Sanders’ impressive rushing numbers capture your attention, as he’s gained 1,750 yards and 14 touchdowns on the ground over the last four years.

There’s been a bunch of great quarterbacks in the history of Oklahoma State football — Mason Rudolph shattered records over his time with the Cowboys, while Brandon Weeden led the Cowboys to impressive heights. Heck, even Mike Gundy was fantastic during his time leading Oklahoma State on the field from 1986 to 1989. However, the now-Oklahoma State coach believes Sanders could pass them all.

After coming oh-so close to a Big 12 title and College Football Playoff berth last season, Spencer Sanders has Oklahoma State at 4-0, ranked No. 7 in the nation. If he continues his fantastic play, he could prove Mike Gundy right while leading the Cowboys to historic places.
