The Oklahoma State Cowboys were struggling against the TCU Horned Frogs on Sunday evening in the 2023 Big 12 Baseball Championship Game. The Cowboys were trailing the Horned Frogs 9-2 in the bottom of the fifth inning. Oklahoma State head coach Josh Holliday took some time to speak with the ESPN2 broadcast crew in the bottom of the fifth to talk about how his team can make a comeback.

Oklahoma State Josh Holliday talks about how his team can rally

“Well, we’re facing a pretty good one right now. [Luke] Savage is one of the better relief pitchers in the conference. So, he doesn’t give you much to hit. He sinks it pretty good. Throwing some really nice sliders. So, we’re gonna have to find a few guys to get on base. Maybe fire one off in these big ole deep gaps, try to get something going or wear him out enough to get him out of the game. But they’ve got a good staff and they’ve got guys lined up. We’re just gonna have to battle. That’s the way these tournaments are and get into Game 6. You’ve just got to keep digging into your courage each pitch,” Holliday said.

“Dom [Dominick Reid], the last two innings. I’ve been really pleased with how he’s competing. He hasn’t pitched a lot, but he’s got a plus changeup. Competing. He’s handling himself well. They’re a tough offense. If you give them anything, they run the bases well. And swing at pitches out of the zone. They’re strong. They’ve got good players. So, two innings from him so far have been good. And we’re just looking to get more guys in there, but we can’t get overextended. We have a limit on the pitches certain guys can throw based on where we’re at this weekend. And it’s gonna take everybody to get through it,” Holliday said.

Does he feel good about his chances to play at home next weekend in the 2023 NCAA Tournament?

“I hope so,” Holliday said. “Obviously, you try to take care of your own business which is winning. That usually helps the cause. We’ve won four games here against good baseball teams all week long. And so, yeah, I hope as Regular Season Co-Champion and playing all the way to the finals, hopefully for the Big 12, that would be something that resume and that ballclub earned.”

The 16 regional host sites were announced during the game and the Cowboys did earn a home game in Stillwater for the upcoming 2023 NCAA Tournament.

Oklahoma State currently trails TCU 12-5 in the top of the 8th inning. The game is being nationally televised on ESPN2.

Last night against Texas Tech, the Cowboys trailed 5-0 after seven innings and they rallied to prevail 6-5 to punch their tickets to the Big 12 Championship Game.
