North Texas defensive coordinator Skyler Cassity is expected to follow Eric Morris to Oklahoma State in the same role, On3’s Pete Nakos reported. The Mean Green made a run to the American Championship this season.

Cassity helped North Texas become one of the top defenses in the American in his lone season with the program. The Mean Green ranked fourth in the league with 370.4 yards allowed per game, and their 24.9 points allowed ranked sixth in the conference.

Cassity arrived at North Texas after serving as the defensive coordinator at Sam Houston State. That came after two years in the role at Abilene Christian and two seasons as the linebackers/nickels/safeties coach at Missouri State.

Skyler Cassity began his coaching career in 2014 as a student assistant at Auburn under Gus Malzahn and Casey Woods. Following graduation in 2016, he worked as a graduate assistant at Texas State in 2016 and at Texas Tech from 2017-19 before heading to Missouri State.

Morris is preparing to take over as Oklahoma State head coach following three years as the head coach at North Texas. He took the Mean Green from a 5-7 record in his first season to 11-2 this past year, falling to Tulane in the American Conference title game on Friday.

Previously, Morris was the head coach at Incarnate Word and helped the Cardinals to two FCS Playoff appearances. His final season ended with a 10-3 overall record and a 7-1 mark in Southland Conference action before losing in the second round of the playoffs.

Now, he will succeed Mike Gundy as Oklahoma State head coach. Cowboys athletics director Chad Weiberg pointed to Morris’ track record of development as a reason for excitement about the hire. He notably worked with or recruited quarterbacks such as Cam Ward, Patrick Mahomes, Baker Mayfield and John Mateer over the course of his coaching career.

“Today begins the next era of Oklahoma State Football,” Weiberg said in a statement. “I am thrilled to introduce Eric Morris, his wife Maggie and their boys Jack and George to the OSU Family. Coach Morris has proven his ability to build and lead winning football programs. He has consistently identified, recruited and developed some of the best players in college football.”
