In his heart, Braxton Myers was meant to be in Mississippi.

His father, Michael Myers, was originally committed to the Rebels as a senior at Vicksburg (Miss.) High. He still has family scattered throughout the state. On top of that, the Ole Miss coaches wouldn’t take no for an answer.

Myers, the On3 Consensus‘ No. 25-rated cornerback in the country, pledged to Ole Miss on Thursday. The one-time USC verbal commitment remained a priority for Rebels coach Lane Kiffin and defensive backs coach Sam Carter.

“When I told them I was committing to USC, they told me they were still gonna recruit me. They still recruited me, they still wanted me, they still wanted me to come visit, so when I visited on July 29 I really enjoyed it. Some things came up in my head and I had to really think about my decision,” Myers told On3.

“Coach Carter has been a part of my recruitment since he was at Arkansas and I was a freshman,” he elaborated. “I like how he recruits the Dallas Metroplex and he has what it takes to oget me where I wanna be. My goal is to reach the NFL and he’ll do a good job of helping me do that in the best conference in college football. It’s competitive and they don’t just want me; they need me and want me to come in and contribute right away as a freshman. That was a big part of my recruitment because I never heard a coach say they needed me.”

Return to Oxford in July was the catalyst

The four-star defensive back from Coppell (Texas) returned to Oxford in July, which provided even more clarity on his next move. He preferred the vibes in a college town and was a better match with the Ole Miss coaches.

With the Ole Miss coaches, it came down to relationships and their personalities,” Myers said. “Coach Kiffin is a cool, laid-back guy. He trusts his coaches to coach and develop their guys. It’s laid back and everyone on the football team has chemistry.”

“Coach Carter is always on me as a player, on and off the field, with life skills,” he noted. “.He’s a family guy and being around his family on the visit in July was great.”

Myers is the nation’s No. 215 overall player in the nation according to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He’s comfortable with his fit in the SEC.

“I realized I wanted to be in a college town more than a city,” Myers explained. “I wanted to have a college experience and it’s big for my family because they’re all in Mississippi. My dad is from Mississippi. Oxford is a great place to be, one of the best college football towns in America. Seeing the Grove itself, the view of the city on game day is amazing. People come out to support Ole Miss football and every game is gonna be filled with fans. The energy itself in Oxford is such a football town.”

Myers will return to Ole Miss when Auburn comes to town on Oct. 15 for his official visit.
