Lane Kiffin addresses latest on his coaching future ahead of Egg Bowl
The storyline of the Egg Bowl is arguably not even on the field, as it really begins postgame with the coaching decision to come for Ole Miss’ Lane Kiffin. He, though, remains focused only on what he and his team need to do today in Starkville.
Kiffin spoke in a pregame interview with Marty Smith on the field this morning ahead of the noon kickoff at Davis Wade Stadium for No. 7 Ole Miss vs. Mississippi State in the Egg Bowl. He provided little insight into his plans for where he’ll be coaching next season. Instead, Kiffin is trying to focus on helping to complete the winningest regular season in the history of the state of Mississippi.
“But, hey, today is about this game. And like you said, 11 wins potentially for the first time in school history. That’s the first time for 11 wins in the entire state, by any program, in the regular season. So, a lot on the line, and our guys are focused and ready to play,” Kiffin said. “This noise thing you’re referring to? This has been going on for weeks. This isn’t new for us.
“I’m looking at — we kick off in, what, an hour and a half or something like that. That’s all I’m worried about today. And then, after that, let’s go watch (his son) Knox beat Tupelo at Oxford High School.”

This has been ongoing for weeks with Kiffin. He has been the top candidate for the open jobs at LSU and Florida, while also having the opportunity to simply remain at Ole Miss. However, that process has been complicated as this regular season has come to an end, namely with the Rebels almost certain to be in the College Football Playoff and still having a chance to be in the SEC Championship as a win this afternoon over the Bulldogs would have them at 11-1 overall.
With that, it was announced during Ole Miss’ bye week that a decision would be made on all of this by tomorrow after the Egg Bowl. The latest now, as of this mornin,g is that it’s down to Ole Miss or LSU for Kiffin, with Florida not expected to be under consideration anymore per GatorOnline’s Zach Abolverdi and later confirmed by On3’s Chris Low.
Ole Miss is going to try to cap off its all-time regular season with an 11th win, which could still send it to Atlanta, but would almost absolutely put the Rebels into the CFP. Beyond that, Kiffin has given nothing else out as to, as of today, whether he’ll be staying in Oxford or headed elsewhere in the SEC.
