Ole Miss hammered Oklahoma in the eighth inning of the first game of the College World Series, hitting three home runs in a row. The Rebels hit back-to-back-to-back home runs in the eighth, scoring four runs and taking an 8-2 lead. The home run spree was the first time three-in-a-row were hit by a team in the CWS since LSU did it in 1998.

Ole Miss blasts three home runs in a row

Watching all three in a row feels like a case of deja vu, as the second and third deep shots came before the crowd even had a chance to calm down from the last one. Chazz Martinez was the unlucky pitcher for Oklahoma to face their momentum, facing 10 batters and giving up four runs on three home runs. TJ McCants started the rally with a two-run shot, followed by Calvin Harris and Justin Bench.

The barrage gave the Rebels a six-run lead heading into the bottom of the eighth inning as they chase their first national title in school history.

Tim Elko on the home run barrage

After the big win, Ole Miss captain Tim Elko was interviewed by ESPN’s Kris Budden on the field and broke down how he was able to be so effective against Oklahoma early.

“We were just trying to get pitches up and put good swings on them,” answered Elko. “He was a really good pitcher, I think he’s an All-American. We were just trying to get some good pitches to hit, lay off the stuff in the dirt and down low and we were able to do that.”

Elko was then asked about how it felt to be in the dugout watching as his teammates hit three home runs in a row in the eighth inning.

“Insanity,” said Elko. “They said it on the board, I think it’s the first time it’s ever happened in this ballpark. Just an incredible experience. So happy for those guys and for the team.”
