Mookie Cook, one of the top prospects in the 2023 class, has committed to Oregon, he tells On3.

The five-star small forward is the second highest-ranked recruit to choose the Ducks in the modern recruiting era. Only Bol Bol ranked higher coming out of high school.

Cook is ranked as the No. 6 prospect in the 2023 class, according to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

The Portland, Oregon native ultimately chose the Ducks over Kentucky and Gonzaga. He also received offers from Kansas, UCLA, Texas Tech, Michigan, Memphis, Arizona, among others.

Cook is Oregon’s second commitment of the class, joining four-star PG Jackson Shelstad.

Cook on Oregon

Earlier this month, On3 spoke to Cook about his recruitment, and more specifically, about the Oregon Ducks.

What’s Oregon’s recruiting pitch?

“Their pitch has honestly been… you’re born and raised here…you’d have your family here and your whole support system. And also come in and have a big role there and be able to play your game to the fullest and have great pieces around you.”

What would it be like for you to put on for your home state?

“Oh man, that would be big, of course. That’s always I’ve always repped, you know, Oregon, Portland, Oregon. That’s just something I’ve always wanted to do, since I was a youngin’.

Reclassification?

Rumors have swirled about the possibility of Cook forgoing his senior year of high school, and joining the Ducks a year early as part of the 2022 class. However, Cook says that won’t be the case, and he will remain in 2023.

“I want to experience being a McDonald’s All-American, USA, and all that so I’m going to stay (in 2023),” he said.

Scouting Report

“Cook has all the tools. At 6-foot-8 he has the positional size. The broad shoulders and long arms showcase a projectable frame. Cook is a functional athlete and he has a smooth release on his jump shot with range. The question mark with Cook is his consistency. He seems to get lost in the shuffle a good amount, not imposing his will on the flow of the game. Cook has a tendency to settle for jump shots. He has the dimensions and physical traits to be a good team defender. This upcoming summer will be a big one in the development of Cook figuring out who and what he is as a prospect and player. The tools are there, the upside is still immense.” – Jamie Shaw, On3 National Recruiting Analyst
