For months, San Francisco Sacred Heart linebacker Jerry Mixon was leaning towards staying in state. UCLA but late in July, he started to think more about the Oregon Ducks.

Dan Lanning and the staff in Eugene offered the 6-foot-2, 200-pound three-star linebacker in late April and the Ducks have been on his radar since.

The communication stayed steady. The Oregon staff got to know Mixon. And after deciding to visit Eugene late in July, the Ducks took control of this race.

“I grew up an Oregon fan, so even before I got up there for the visit a few weeks ago, I had made my mind up,” Mixon told On3. “My mom and I talked about Oregon and UCLA a lot. We debated on the schools a little, and I knew Oregon was it for me.”

The new staff at Oregon has Mixon excited

On the first day (July 29) he arrived in Eugene, before he even had time to eat dinner, Mixon told Lanning and his staff about his decision. UCLA had a strong lead late in the spring after an official visit to Westwood, but after taking his time with his recruitment, Oregon had time to close on the Bruins.

Mixon is a believer in the staff he has committed to.

“Coach Lanning, coach Lupoi, and the new coaching staff at Oregon has energy, they know how to win, and many have been at programs with great history. I love what the new coaches are doing and it is a program I want to be a part of.

“The knowledge they have, how coach Lanning is a defensive-minded head coach, and the players they are bringing in will have Oregon on top soon. I see Oregon playing for a national championship in the next three years.”

Dreams are coming true for Mixon

Growing up in northern California, Mixon had his eye on numerous Pac-12 schools. Those Oregon uniforms grabbed his attention early in life and he quickly became a fan of the Ducks.

He attended a handful of games at Autzen Stadium, he had some Oregon gear, and it has come full circle for the No. 53 prospect in California.

“Oregon was my dream school,” Mixon said. “I had a top six, I had different schools on top, and it was all overwhelming at times, but I love how everything played out.

“The day I visited Oregon, I was feeling Oregon. I love the school, the scenery, the environment, and the people. With the new coaching staff and the energy they have created, I know Oregon is the perfect place for me.”
