Oregon won handily over Stanford on Saturday, improving to 4-1 on the season. But it was a slow game for quarterback Bo Nix throughout. Nix finished with just 166 yards and two touchdowns on 55.2% throwing. It’s something he will want to improve on going forward.

Ducks head coach Dan Lanning explained the key to Nix rebounding nicely against Arizona. He thinks the quarterback just needs to follow the play and “lean back” into his job. Once the opportunity is there Nix has to take advantage of it quickly.

“There wasn’t a lot other than ‘hey let’s operate and do what we have done,'” Lanning said. “Do what the play is intended to do. There’s a couple of plays that he extended that didn’t work out the way it needed to work out. I think, just lean back into what your job is, what the system is. If the opportunity is there, we’ll take advantage of it.”

Nix, a transfer from Auburn, has been playing well overall for Oregon. He is on pace to finish with a career-high in completion percentage and touchdowns. Under offensive coordinator Denny Dillingham, the Ducks are averaging over 40 points per game.

But Stanford was a blip in the record Nix will be looking to move on from. While Arizona is next on the schedule, an important one, on the road vs. UCLA, will be Nix’s biggest Pac-12 threat to this point.

Dan Lanning raves on Bo Nix, athletic ability

Nix had a rough Week One to start off the season, failing to reach the end zone and throwing two interceptions in a 49-3 loss to Georgia. Ever since that game, Nix flipped a switch and established himself as one of the nation’s top dual-threat quarterbacks.

Lanning used to face Nix when he was coaching for the Bulldogs and Nix was quarterbacking for Auburn, as he spoke about his familiarity with his athleticism.

“Knowing Bo and going against Bo for a long time myself and then coach (Kenny) Dillingham’s familiarity with Bo, we knew how athletic Bo is,” Lanning said.

“He’s really talented, he’s probably as fast a quarterback as there is out there, the guy runs really well and made some really good decisions there on Saturday to put himself in a position where he can run the ball. But he’s done that consistently this season, so no surprise for anybody in our building.”
