Penn State quarterback Sean Clifford leaves Iowa-Penn State game with injury

Penn State starting quarterback Sean Clifford headed to the locker room in the second quarter of the Iowa-Penn State game in Iowa City, Iowa.

It’s been an up and down performance for Clifford so far against Iowa. He has thrown two interceptions so far in the game but, then he ran in this score for six for the Nittany Lions.

Iowa cut the Penn State lead to 17-10 at halftime.

In the first half, Clifford completed 15 of his 25 pass attempts for 146 passing yards, while throwing two interceptions and no touchdown passes.

In 2019, Clifford threw for 2,654 yards, while tossing in 23 touchdowns and seven interceptions. In 2020, he took a bit of a step back, throwing for 1,883 yards, while tossing in 16 touchdowns and nine interceptions.

So far in the 2021 season, he’s thrown for over 1,400 passing yards, while tossing in 11 touchdown passes and five interceptions. Iowa forced two of those interceptions this afternoon in the first half.

Coming into the game, it was billed as one of the most anticipated games of the 2021 college football season. Both teams are undefeated and ranked inside the top 5.

Coming out of the locker room in the second half, Clifford was not dressed on the Penn State sidelines. Penn State head coach James Franklin would not reveal the nature of Clifford’s injury to sideline reporters, but it’s clear he will not be coming back in the game.

He was rated as a four-star prospect in the 2017 recruiting class. Clifford attended St. Xavier (Cincinnati, Ohio). The 6-foot-2 quarterback was named an Elite 11 finalist in 2016, where he was named the camp’s most accurate passer. As a senior, he threw for over 1,400 passing yards and nine touchdowns through the air, while rushing for over 500 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns on the ground.
