South Carolina pulled off an upset this weekend defeating No. 13 Kentucky on the road in a 24-14 victory. The Gamecocks offense, led by quarterback Spencer Rattler, got off to a slow start to the game, which head coach Shane Beamer spoke about follwing the game.

“Yeah he was a little off, we didn’t play a ton of plays and I feel like we played okay in the first half, we just kind of got in plus territory a couple of times and went backwards. We threw the interception late in the half to (Austin) Stogner, we just wanted to give him an opportunity to go up and get it and under-threw it a little bit,” Beamer said. “But I told Spencer at halftime that he’s been in environments like this and I told everybody on offense we all need to just play better around him, he’s gonna make plays in the second half to go win it.”

South Carolina scored just 7 points in the first half as a result of favorable field position, scoring on a one play, two-yard drive on their first possession of the game following a fumble recovery returned to the Wildcat’s two-yard line.

But Beamer was right, as Rattler broke the team’s tie on the first possession of the second half with a 42-yard touchdown pass to Antwane Wells, which gave the Gamecocks a lead that they would hold onto until the very end of the ball game and meant a little bit more to Rattler.

“I told Cole Cubelic in that post-game interview as well, it’s not lost on me either that Oklahoma played Texas today out in Dallas,” Beamer said. “And that was the game last year that Spencer got benched in and lost his starting quarterback job, and I told him on Tuesday this is going to be one heck of a story when you go up to Lexington on Saturday night and get this win for us.”

Beamer’s manifestation came true, as Rattler led the Gamecocks to their first conference win of the season on the day that lead to his journey to Columbia.

“So on the same day Oklahoma plays Texas, one year later, that ultimately led Spencer here because he lost his job at Oklahoma, he leads us to a win like this in Lexington, Kentucky tonight is pretty freaking special for that kid too,” Beamer said.

This offseason Oklahoma lost Rattler, the quarterback who replaced him in Caleb Williams, their head coach Lincoln Riley, and to Texas Saturday in historic blowout fashion 49-0. Rattler surely got the last laugh over his former school this weekend, and hopefully himself and the Gamecocks cab build on their recent win as they head back home to take on Texas A&M in their next matchup.
