Stephen Garcia is one of the great quarterbacks in South Carolina football history. With long, flowing hair, he was unmistakable on the field, helping to lead South Carolina to win the SEC East and upset top-ranked Alabama.

While at South Carolina, Stephen Garcia’s head ball coach was Steve Spurrier. A coach known for his quick wit and explosive offense, Spurrier was long a fan favorite. So, it should be no surprise that Garcia had a very funny story about Spurrier.

“Yeah, they’re not exactly PG,” Stephen Garcia said of his memories of Spurrier.

“But I think one that I’ve told a couple times is–it was actually my first practice. I went up there early and I’m walking with Blake Mitchell and a couple of the other quarterbacks and Coach Spurrier starts walking up. We’re doing our pre-practice warming up and he just takes the shirt off–just takes a shirt off. And, I’m looking at him like I’m looking at this 65-year-old dude with no shirt on and I was just like, ‘Hey, what’s up coach.’ He’s just staring (at) me right in my face. Right (in) my eyes and he goes, ‘Ah, yeah, just catching some rays.'”

Never change Steve Spurrier.

Since moving on from South Carolina, Stephen Garcia played in the Canadian Football League, the Arena Football League, and the AAF. Steve Spurrier retired from being a college coach after the 2015 season before a brief stint as the winningest AAF coach for the Orlando Apollos.
