It’s tradition for coaches to get a Gatorade bath after a big win. But after the Duke’s Mayo Bowl, Shane Beamer got doused with something much different.

Hope he likes mayonnaise.

Yes, after South Carolina defeated North Carolina in the Mayo Bowl, Beamer took a nice bath in mayonnaise — 4.5 gallons of it, to be exact.

He didn’t waste any time acknowledging what was coming next after the game.

“Honestly, I’m thinking, ‘Oh my god, I’ve got to go do this Mayo bath now,’ to be honest with you,” Beamer told ESPN’s Taylor McGregor.

McGregor ended the interview by asking what the mayonnaise bath and the $10,000 donated to charity means to him. He didn’t hold back.

“It means we won, but that’s about the only good thing about it, to be honest with you,” Beamer said.

Even quarterback Dakereon Joyner said Beamer “can have” the mayonnaise bath. It was certainly something.

Earlier this week, Duke’s announced its plans to shower the winning coach in mayonnaise. Both Beamer and North Carolina coach Mack Brown had varying responses.

“I’m not a big mayonnaise guy,” Beamer said. “I mean, I’ll gladly take one for the team on that one if it means we won a football game, but woof.”

“If we won a game, I’d let someone hit me in the face with a frying pan,” Brown said. “I don’t care.”

It’s only appropriate that Beamer was the one to get the bath.

That said, the mayonnaise shower had plenty of hype coming into the game. Beamer looked thrilled, too.

But how did they get 4.5 gallons of mayonnaise in the bucket? Well, Duke’s Mayo posted a video of it.

South Carolina defeats North Carolina in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl

As for the game itself, South Carolina came out firing and never really looked back. The Gamecocks had two big plays right out of the gate when Jaheim Bell caught 69-yard and a 66-yard touchdown passes to put them ahead early.

South Carolina had an 18-0 lead after one quarter, but North Carolina responded with a huge play of its own. British Brooks took a hand-off 63 yards to get the Tar Heels back in it in the second quarter, cutting the lead to 18-7. Still, South Carolina took a 25-13 lead into halftime.

After the break, the Gamecocks remained in control en route to the 38-21 victory.

In what’s likely his last game in a Tar Heel uniform, quarterback Sam Howell completed 12 of 20 passes for 205 yards and a touchdown. He’s expected to declare for the NFL Draft, but didn’t announce anything prior to the Mayo Bowl. If he ends up leaving, he’ll go out as one of the most decorated quarterbacks in Tar Heels history, holding 21 North Carolina program records.
