Four-star tight end Walker Lyons of Folsom (Calif.) High announced his commitment to Stanford Saturday afternoon.

The 6-foot-4, 230 pounder chose the Cardinal over USC, Georgia, and Alabama.

Lyons on why he chose Stanford

“Ultimately the reason I chose Stanford was because of the combination of developing tight ends to the NFL and being able to receive a degree from the #1 academic institution in the world,” Lyons said. “They have the most tight ends in the league over the past 10 years and am excited to continue the tradition.”

Relationships stood out to Lyons

“I’m super close with coach Turner, the tight ends coach, and coach Shaw,” Lyons said. “Coach Turner has been straightforward from the beginning and told me what their plan was for me. Coach Shaw has been more than just a coach, we have a good relationship and we just talk about life.”

Stanford’s plan for Walker Lyons

“They plan to use me all over the field,” Lyons said. “Like a flex role in the offense, and really as a 4 down tight end. Which means I can be on the field and do every job, whether that be running deep, medium, or blocking or in the backfield.”

Walker Lyons Scouting Summary

“One of the more polished pass catchers at the tight end position in the 2023 recruiting cycle,” On3’s Director of Scouting Charles Power wrote. “Lines up with his hand in the dirt as a true in-line Y, splits out wide and lines up in the slot as a flex option. Excellent body control and ability to contort his frame to be in the best position to catch the football. Measured in at 6-foot-5, just under 230 pounds. Had 44 receptions for 746 yards and 9 touchdowns as a junior. Helped lead NorCal powerhouse Folsom High to a state championship final as a junior. Twitchy off the line of scrimmage and has tremendous wiggle for his size as a route runner. Shows some explosiveness as a hooper on the hardwood. Needs to be more violent in the run game as a blocker but does have willingness.”

Lyons ranks as the No. 98 player in the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that accounts for all four major recruiting sites. He also tabs in as the No. 5 tight end and the No. 8 player in the state of California.
