The Stanford Cardinal have made a decision regarding men’s head basketball coach, Jerod Haase. They will be retaining him, according to Jon Wilner. There had been growing speculation around his job status in recent days, according to Jeff Borzello. The Cardinal lost a hard fought contest on Thursday in the Pac-12 tournament to the top-seeded Arizona Wildcats, 84-80. Stanford trailed only by three points at halftime. It was an impressive game for the Cardinal, especially since Arizona has looked incredible for much of the past month. The Wildcats are likely to land a No. 1 seed in the upcoming NCAA Tournament and they’ve been playing like it recently. Just ask the USC Trojans, whom the Wildcats throttled 91-71 in one of the most impressive performances of the college basketball season.

Bernard Muir statement on Jerod Haase

Stanford Athletic Director Bernard Muir wrote released a statement on Haase on Thursday. It reads: “Coach Haase and I agree that the on-court results of our men’s basketball program are not what we want them to be. Having said that, I believe that the young nucleus of talent on our team and promising recruiting will propel us to take the next steps we all desire while our program continues to operate with great integrity and achieve the highest levels of academic excellence.”

In the past two seasons, Haase has gone 30-28, leading to questions about his job security with Stanford. The Cardinal were down double digits with two minutes left against Arizona State in the Pac-12 Tournament. Miraculously, they battled back and hit a buzzer beater to win. Not only did they win, but they saved Haase’s job, for at least one more season.

This past year was Haase’s sixth year at Stanford. Before coaching for the Cardinal, he spent four seasons with UAB in Conference USA. In the 2014-2015 season, Haase guided UAB to a C-USA Tournament title and earning an NCAA Tournament berth.
