As Syracuse came out of halftime against Notre Dame, the Orange made a big change. Garrett Shrader stood on the sideline as Carlos Del Rio-Wilson started their first drive of the second half — and Shrader might be hurt.

Shrader’s foot appeared to get caught up under a handful of Notre Dame defenders in the first half, but he didn’t leave the game at the time. But out of the break, Del Rio-Wilson took Syracuse’s first snaps as part of a three-and-out.

Shrader completed five of 14 passes for just 35 yards, a touchdown and an interception as part of a rough first half for the Orange. Notre Dame took a 21-7 lead into halftime.

Del Rio-Wilson started his career at Florida last year, but didn’t play a down for the Gators. He entered the transfer portal after the season and wound up at Syracuse, where he’s appeared in four games prior to replacing Shrader on Saturday. He’s completed three of five passes for 32 yards while rushing for 24 yards for the Orange.

Del Rio-Wilson is a former four-star recruit and was the No. 19-ranked recruit from the class of 2021, according to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

Dino Babers says a win over Notre Dame would be ‘a big thing’

As we entered the 2022 season, Notre Dame entered as a Top-10 team while Syracuse was outside the AP Top 25. The roles have since reversed, though, as the Irish entered this weekend’s game in New York unranked while the Orange sit 16th in the nation.

Still, Dino Babers acknowledged the importance of this game based on name recognition alone.

Babers spoke in depth on the brand of Notre Dame during his press conference earlier this week. He says their mark is as recognizable as it gets in college sports and that’s what makes it such an achievement to potentially knock them off.

“Notre Dame has their own television station. … Their brand is unique. Their brand is their brand. They fly alone. They have no wing man. It’s just Notre Dame and any time you get an opportunity to play a brand like that, not only is it something that you aspire to do as an athlete but you kind of take pride in (finding) a way to come up with a win,” Babers said. “If you get a win over Notre Dame, it’s a big thing. They know that everybody gives them their best short. They’re always ready for everyone and they’ll be ready for us as well. It’s a fabulous team.”
