Gladewater (Tex.) wide receiver DJ Allen appeared to be locked into his commitment with TCU. Seemingly out of nowhere, though, Horned Frogs head coach Gary Patterson resigned on Sunday after pressure from school officials to move into a new role in 2022.

Monday afternoon, Allen announced on Twitter that he was reopening his recruitment, though he wasn’t ready to fully decommit from TCU.

Allen, a four-star wideout and the No. 173 player in the 2022 On3 Consensus rankings, is one of three TCU commits in the top-300. He committed to the Horned Frogs in August over offers from Arkansas, Baylor and USC.

DJ Allen is a versatile athlete at the high school level

Allen plays four different sports – football, basketball, baseball and track. Allen has a 100-meter dash time of 10.82 seconds. In football, he was the Class 3A District 6 most valuable player as a junior. He was a first-team all-district selection as a sophomore.

As a junior in 2020, Allen notched 1,316 yards receiving and 17 touchdown catches in 2020. He also added 125 rushing yards and two scores on the ground.

Allen is joined in TCU’s class by four-star Matthew Golden, and both made an impression on On3 Director of Scouting and Rankings Charles Power.

“The two things that immediately jump out about DJ Allen are his production and athleticism,” Power said over the summer. “He is dangerous as a vertical threat and shows the ability to win in contested situations. The ball skills check out in the camp setting as well. Allen’s on-field speed is validated on the track, where he ran the 100 meters in 10.82 seconds this spring. He’s not a smaller receiver either – measuring 5-foot-11, 190 pounds this spring. TCU now has two athletic, tough and productive On300 receivers committed in Allen and Golden.”

With 11 total commits, TCU’s class rankings No. 25 overall and No. 4 in the Big 12.
