Paul Finebaum has been clear about his opinion on TCU and the College Football Playoff. The Horned Frogs have had several close calls this season in Big 12 play, but with one game remaining have managed to get through without a loss.

That’s something only three other teams in college football can say, and that number will drop to two after Ohio State and Michigan play this weekend. Despite this, Finebaum appeared on ESPN’s First Take recently where he was once again loud about his concerns about the Horned Frogs’ ability to “cut it” against the “big boys of college football.”

Finebaum also claimed that “none of us will be watching very closely” when the Horned Frogs play in the Big 12 title game, prompting the conference to come to TCU’s defense with a tweet.

“Couldn’t disagree more, @finebaum,” the tweet read. “Millions of fans across the country have been watching @TCUFootball closely, including 9.3M over the Horned Frogs last two games.”

TCU escaped Baylor on a last-second field goal in Week 12 to remain unbeaten. The week before that, they held Texas to its lowest scoring output all season in a 17-10 victory in Austin.

As much as has been made about the Horned Frogs’ strength of schedule, the fact is that it is actually the highest of any team inside the top four of the CFP rankings. According to ESPN, TCU has played the 35th toughest schedule to this point, better than Georgia (43rd), Ohio State (54th) and Michigan (74th). It also ranks ahead of USC (58th), the No. 6 team.

TCU will close out the regular season at 3 p.m. CT on Saturday against Iowa State, then face either Texas or Kansas State in the Big 12 title game.

Paul Finebaum on TCU

Finebaum went on to admit that while TCU has beaten a lot of “good” teams, he doesn’t think the Horned Frogs have taken down anyone “great” yet. He believes that will be evident if they do win out and make the Playoff, comparing them to Cincinnati from last season, which lost 27-6 to Alabama in the semifinal.

“I thought they would go down last week and they won on a last-second field goal against Baylor, which I think has lost three or four games,” Finebaum said. “They’re a good team. I don’t want to sound like an elitist here, and I’m sure I will, but I don’t think they can cut it against the big boys of college football right now. They’ve beaten a lot of good teams, but nobody great. Beating Texas is no big deal right now. Texas has lost four games. Baylor lost four games.

“So, they’re not gonna play another good team, and I think if they end up on the semifinals against Georgia, they’re gonna lose by three or four touchdowns. Last year Cincinnati played Alabama and they couldn’t hang with them. I don’t think TCU can hang with any of the top teams right now.”
