The Tennessee offense made an under-the-radar acquisition from the transfer portal this offseason, adding former five-star recruit Bru McCoy to the unit after multiple transfers and a suspension at USC derailed his early playing days. While he has not been ruled eligible for the 2022 season at this time, the decision has still not been made official either way.

Tennessee offensive coordinator Alex Golesh faced questions about the possible addition of Bru McCoy to the highly-anticipated offense, clarifying his current status while calling on anyone with the inside track to make sure he is able to take the field for the Volunteers this fall.

“We’re approaching it like we’re going to have him,” said Golesh. “We’ve approached it that way since he got here, and then we’ll adjust as we need to if we don’t.

“But, really good football player – has fit right into our culture, has added to our culture – hard-working, tough, smart, really dynamic. To be honest with you, in a lot of ways, super grateful to be here and have another chance to do this, and having a blast with it. So we’re approaching it like we’re going to have him, and then we’ll adjust if worst case scenario happens. But if anybody’s got any pull, just make sure we’ve got him.”

USC releases statement on Bru McCoy’s eligibility

In a statement released on Sunday, USC said it has “promptly and accurately responded” to Tennessee when it comes to McCoy’s eligibility. While wishing him the best throughout his career, the Trojans also said they have not attempted to block his immediate eligibility.

“USC has — consistent with NCAA rules — promptly and accurately responded to all requests from the University of Tennessee related to the eligibility of Bru McCoy,” the statement read. “At no point since Bru entered the transfer portal in January have we objected to him being made immediately eligible to play at Tennessee. The issue of Bru’s eligibility ultimately rests with the NCAA, and we wish him the very best.”

Tennessee is the third program McCoy has been a part of. Alongside USC, the wide receiver once wore burnt orange and spent a spring practice with Texas. Now, he’s not only representing a different UT but also a new shade of orange. If/when the NCAA approves his eligibility, he will play a major role for the Volunteers.
