The Tennessee offense under Josh Heupel is known for its fast-paced attack. At times, however, this can be confused with a passing attack when having talented and capable running backs is just as important for a Heupel offense to succeed.

Now, Josh Heupel is turning toward a freshman running back in Cam Seldon, who he feels is a very unique young player.

“Really unique player,” Josh Heupel said. “Just with his skillset and the background that he has from playing running back to playing in the slot and outside to playing on the defensive side of the football. He’s played a lot of different positions. He’s never had a true home. We felt like it was important to give him a home here early and grow and expand from that.”

Cam Seldon was a four-star recruit in the Class of 2023, according to the On3 Industry Rankings. He was also the 141st ranked player overall in that class, where he was considered an athlete.

“He’s been really good in what he’s done inside the running back room. He cares, he competes really hard. For a guy that’s got high-end top gear electric speed, he’s willing to stick his foot in the ground, get vertical, get underneath his pads, find a way to get plus two. He’s going to continue to grow who he is today,” Heupel said.

“Man, I expect him to be dramatically better when we get to the kickoff of next September and I say that just because he’s going to continue to grow with the way that he works. He’s got a really high-end ceiling. His ability to be a pass catcher out of the backfield is really unique and obviously a skillset that we want here.”

Cam Seldon on the progress he’s made this spring

Following spring practice, Cam Seldon broke down the progress that he’s made since getting to Tennessee.

“Yeah, it has been real hard, but I’ve been just taking it slow, putting the pieces together. Coach told me I’ll be okay. So, I’m just slowly putting everything together, so it can all make sense. It’s different because I play receiver. I’ll be good, though,” Seldon said.

“I think I had that moment at practice when I got hurt, and I just pushed through. And things were looking more better. I think I needed that; that moment. But yeah, that helped me grow.”
