Winston Watkins, Jr. is only a freshman, but the talented athlete out of IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla. has made an early commitment.

The 5-foot-10, 160-pound wide receiver picked up offers at Florida, Florida State, Georgia Tech, and Texas A&M at camps over the summer and he has committed to the Aggies.

“I have known coach Jimbo Fisher since I went out there to camp when I was in 6th grade,” Watkins said. “He told me at that camp that he wanted to offer me then. He invited me back, but I couldn’t go last year because of COVID-19.

“I went back this summer, he offered, and I have been thinking about them since. I went ahead and called him this weekend and committed to him and Texas A&M.”

The Aggies are the hottest team in the country right now when it comes to recruiting. They landed Denver Harris Saturday and with six five-stars signed in the early signing period, Texas A&M sits on top of the On3 Team Rankings.

“All the top recruits they have, how the coaches are there, and what they are doing on the field played into this decision. A lot of top recruits are choosing Texas A&M and I see why.

“Coach Fisher is a great coach, Texas A&M is a great school, and it is a blessing for me to be committed to them.”

Winston Watkins knows he will now have a lot of eyes on him

Any time a recruit commits early, it creates a buzz. When one commits his freshman year, it created even more buzz. Winston knows what he is doing.

“I have been thinking about this, and I know this is a verbal commitment, but I will work hard and do all I have to do to keep it,” Winston said. “I have the ability, I have the talent, and I have the work ethic to keep the Texas A&M offer and be a part of their recruiting class.

“It is early, but Texas A&M is like a second home for me, I feel comfortable there, and I am going to keep working hard to get there.”

Watkins is related to former Clemson star and NFL veteran Sammy Watkins, so he knows what it takes to be successful. He has put the work in since a young age and now he wants others to join him in College Station.

“I am already doing some recruiting. Like they are doing at Texas A&M in the 2022 class, I want to make the 2025 class great.

“I want to be a leader for coach Fisher and Texas A&M. Coach Fisher has a great program, they have some of the best facilities, and they are about to win big, so I am going to really recruit hard to get other guys to come with me.”
