Jimbo Fisher expects Devon Achane (injury) will play again this season

Take one look at Texas A&M‘s statistics this season and you’ll quickly realize a Devon Achane injury could be absolutely devastating to the Aggies. That proved to be the case Saturday, when Achane missed the Auburn game with a foot problem. Will Texas A&M get him back this season?

Coach Jimbo Fisher answered that question affirmatively, though he seemed less than sure.

“Ah, we’ll s… yes,” said Fisher, who started his response to the question by shaking his head left and right before stopping and shaking it up and down as he verbally pivoted.

Achane was sorely missed on Saturday night in a 13-10 loss at Auburn.

The Aggies ran for just 94 yards in the game, led by Amari Daniels, who finished with 11 carries for 83 yards. Texas A&M totaled only 215 yards in the contest.

Those statistics we mentioned above? Try this on for size.

No Texas A&M player has topped the 100-yard mark on the season other than Achane, who currently has 158 carries for 887 yards and six touchdowns. Daniels checks in next best on the team, with just 15 carries for 94 yards.

So Devon Achane’s injury is more than a little significant to an Aggies squad that is absolutely reeling and on a six-game losing skid.

Devon Achane injury not season-ending?

If Fisher’s answer was accurate, the good news is Devon Achane’s injury doesn’t appear to be season-ending. The Aggies could certainly use him back.

Along with his ability as a runner, Achane has been a major contributor as a return specialist. He can also catch passes out of the backfield, currently fourth on the team with 196 yards receiving and a team-leading three touchdown catches.

Still, Texas A&M will need others to emerge in the event he isn’t back for upcoming games against UMass and LSU to close the season.

“It’s difficult, but we have other guys that can make plays and we had opportunities to make plays (against Auburn),” Fisher said. “The first drive we had a big opportunity and had a protection issue. We had a big guy down the field that we could’ve had some time the very first drive of the game. We had three coming up for a touchdown and busted the protection inside and had it going. Couldn’t get it down there, but we had some opportunities.

“Amari (Daniels) had some nice runs, Le’Veon (Moss) had some nice runs. Those guys are gonna be really good players.”

Texas A&M will return to action Saturday for a noon ET kickoff against UMass.
