With next season right around the corner, position battles are heating up around the country. Fall practices are one of the last opportunities for players to prove why they should get snaps this fall. That’s the case down in College Station with Jimbo Fisher’s Texas A&M Aggies starting camp on Wednesday.

During his press conference to open fall practice, Fisher talked about the nature of the position battles for his roster. He wants his players focused on the right things and only on what they can control in order to win their roles.

“(You) can’t worry about it. You control what you can control. That’s how you play. You can’t worry about the guy beside you who you’re competing with. If you’re an offensive guy, you’re worried about the guy you’re competing (against) on defense,” said Fisher. “You got to play well with the situation in hand in front of you at that particular time and be consistent each and every day. That’s the thing you ask for. Hopefully what I have is multiple guys that can play.”

With so much talent on the roster, each player is left to focus on putting themselves above the rest. Jimbo Fisher’s advice for his players is to take one out of the book of a golf great. It isn’t about the achievement but rather the effort and detail it takes to get there.

“When they ask Tiger Woods about ‘are you thinking about the winning putt?’ No. I’m thinking about where I’m gonna hit and the way I’m gonna hit it. This is what I have to do to make it and that’s what you have to lose yourself in because you can’t think about results,” Fisher said. “You got to be a process oriented group in everything you ever do. That’s the same way when you’re in a competition battle”

Snaps in fall camp will help coaches set the Aggies depth chart heading into their opener against Sam Houston. However, Fisher doesn’t want his players thinking too deeply on the matter. He wants to see his players go out, make their mark, and let the chips fall where they may.

“Just make your value as much as you can and control what you can control.”
