Texas A&M has worked its way all the way down the depth chart when it comes to its quarterback room. First, it was Haynes King, then it was Max Johnson, and then it was back to King. Finally, against Ole Miss this weekend, they ended up at Conner Weigman as their starter with some positive results in the loss. Jimbo Fisher says it’s a result of some very big strides from the freshman’s work since he arrived in College Station.

Fisher opened up on Weigman’s growth during his press conference on Monday. He said the staff has seen things click for Weigman over the last few weeks and it’s because of his natural instincts and work ethic.

“Early in the last couple of weeks, you could just see it in practice. You can just see him start to come on and feel very comfortable in what he’s doing and how he’s doing it…When you play quarterback, you’ve got to be able to do all things…He just really started clicking,” said Fisher. “You could see it. I’ve always felt that about him that he was going to do that. He’s a hard worker and he has a natural knack to do things. He has a feel for things in an instinctive part of the game. He’s just really natural at what he does. He’s accurate with what he does.”

Weigman was the No. 4 QB and a Top-30 player in On3’s 2022 Consensus Top Football Recruits. He appeared in A&M’s loss to South Carolina last week and completed 8/15 passes for 91 yards. That production earned Weigman the start against the Rebels where he finished with 338 yards and four touchdowns on 28/44 passing.

Fisher does want to pump the brakes on Weigman, though. It was one great performance to start the young prospect’s career. Still, he was happy to see some much-needed production from the Aggie’s QB spot from a player he’s happy to work with.

“Again, he’s played one game. Just let him be a freshman and play his second game. Let him keep playing,” Fisher said. “But I’m extremely happy and I love coaching the guy. He is really fun to coach.”
