The Houston Texans selected former Texas A&M offensive lineman Kenyon Green in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft, taking him with the No. 15 overall pick. Green being taken in the opening round on draft night is an incredible feat, and it’s one that is incredibly deserved in the eyes of Aggies head coach Jimbo Fisher.

Fisher watched Green go from a Day 1 starter at Texas A&M to that first round pick. Green came to college as a five-star prospect and the No. 9 rated recruit in the 2019 class, according to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. But that has been far from the only reason for his success.

“He’s that way, he’s been that way since – I mean he’s been a three-year starter, a starter from day one,” Fisher said. “Since the day he got here, very talented. But as gifted as he is, that’s the least thing you need to worry about. It’s who he is, his character, his intelligence, his work ethic. All the intangibles. I always tell our players let the intangibles – because those are the choices you make about who you are – be what you live on.

“Let your talent be the last thing you rely on. He’s extremely talented, but he has all the intangibles that a great player has and a great teammate has and a good person has. Then you combine that with great physical skills and you have a great player. That’s what you got, and I think that Houston got a tremendous player.”

Fisher thinks Green will have a great career in the NFL

When assessing how Green’s game will translate to the NFL, Fisher had tremendous things to say. Green has all of the physical tools, but as Fisher said, he also finds success in the intangibles that you can’t teach.

“You got an hour? I joke, but like I said before — One, you have a physical guy who’s 6’4″, 325 pounds, and he can play guard or tackle because he has an 83-inch wing span,” said Fisher. “Which is like most tackles, guys who are 6’6″, 6’7”. A lot of guys block you, but he can move the big guys and he’s athletic enough to block the skill guys and that’s a rare combination. And plus he has extra arm length and big hands — when he gets his hands on you, you may beat him and then all of a sudden he gets that last push to protect and things.”

Fisher has not been shy about showing his support for Green, and that made a big impact on the Texas A&M product on draft night.

“Seeing all the hard work [the Texas A&M coaching staff] put into me all those years, seeing the tears of joy [from the coaches], just the excitement — I was happy,” Green said about his coaches reactions to him getting drafted in the first round.
