Jimbo Fisher was impressed with the performance of his young wide receivers in their season opening victory over Sam Houston State in Week 1.

Texas A&M took care of business with a 31-0 victory, and the Aggies’ offense had an impressive performance. Speaking with the media afterwards, Fisher singled out wide receivers Chris Marshall and Evan Stewart due to their promising performances.

“Really good,” Fisher stated, when asked about their chemistry with Texas A&M quarterback Haynes King. “Chris had been banged up for a little bit of camp and hadn’t got as much time there. He played really well. Missed about three, four days there and then got back into playing and did well. I thought both of those guys got critical plays. I thought they caught the ball well. You could see their ability to run after catch. Their size, their ball skills and their athleticism in what they did, along with you know, you saw Yulkeith [Brown] too. Another young guys that can run and got a big play. That was a third read on the backside that we went to. Two of those touchdown throws, what I loved about them were those you  players, and I say this not just for the quarterback but for the young players, sometimes you know you’re the backside of something, you have a tendency — we tell them all the time, we need five full speed routes. We got the ability to go everywhere if the quarterback reads it right. They ran full speed routes and were rewarded with big plays.

“It was really nice to see that, but I thought those guys did a nice job in the game. That’s the first time to get out there and playing, and we’re productive.”

Moreover, Stewart caught five passes for 57 yards, while Marshall hauled in four receptions for 41 yards. While the electrifying Ainias Smith led the way with six receptions for 164 yards and a touchdown, it’s evident the freshman duo made their impact on Fisher.

Additionally, the promising receiving corps for the Aggies helped quarterback Haynes King have a great day, as he passed for 364 yards and three touchdowns. While King also threw two interceptions, he’ll be looking to avoid turnovers in Week 2.

Next up for the Aggies is Appalachian State, coming off a heartbreaking loss to North Carolina. Texas A&M will have to have their offense working on all cylinders in Week 2, as they look to avoid a monstrous upset.
