After getting down 14-0 to Arkansas in a hurry, Texas A&M scratched and clawed and eventually survived a late game-winning field goal attempt to leave Arlington, Texas, with a 23-21 win. The Aggies are now 2-0 in two games against ranked opponents after a shocking upset loss at home to Appalachian State in Week 2.

Texas A&M hasn’t been perfect in the two wins, but they’ve made plays when they needed to and cut back on the moments where they’ve shot themselves in the foot. It’s all been snowballing in a good way to have the Aggies sitting at 3-1 ahead of a some critical SEC matchups to come and head coach Jimbo Fisher thinks his team is on the right track.

“We are gutsy,” Fisher said postgame on the field. “We play hard. We just kind have the self-inflicted wounds. We had a chance to put things away, we gotta learn to keep some poise. But listen, the fight, the heart, the guts of these guys to be able to come out here and do that, and the drives in the second half, the defense making the changing play. And offensively we could’ve finished at the end. We’re getting better, we just gotta get better quicker.”

It was a slow start for the Aggies, who trailed by two touchdowns in the first quarter. But some critical turnovers from Arkansas, including one that led to a ridiculous scoop-and-score touchdown for the Texas A&M defense, left a crack in the door for the Aggies to come back and win.

After losing to App State, Fisher said he was glad his team had ranked matchups with Miami and Arkansas on deck. He wanted to find out about his team and how they’d respond. So far, they’ve passed that test.

Now the Aggies get into the heart of SEC play with a road matchup at Mississippi State next weekend.

“Because we’re going to find out who we are,” Fisher said of the last two games. “I think it’s giving a chance to really stand up and find your guts and we’ve got another one next week at Mississippi State, who’s a great team. That’s a hard place to play. We needed those challenges to find out who we are and that’s the best way to do.”
