Texas A&M put up its second-highest point total and its best in power conference play so far this season last Saturday vs. Ole Miss. Yes, the ultimate result was still a loss, the Aggies’ fourth straight. However, one member of the program’s No. 1 ranked recruiting class shined in his first start.

Five-star true freshman Conner Weigman was the man under center for A&M’s best offensive day of the season considering the competition, and he was the third option at quarterback for Jimbo Fisher heading into the year. But injuries and a lack of success on that end of the field led to a QB carousel which wound up landing the third-stringer the starting spot.

The true freshman was thrown right to the fire, tasked with throwing 44 passes against the Rebels, of which he completed 28 for 338 yards, four touchdowns and zero interceptions. That’s pretty flawless for a first-time starter.

Fisher felt the same, and complimented the freshman this week for being able to manage the game when asked about his debut start went.

“Really well. I mean, of course there’s always a few plays in here and there. But I mean, really well. And the big thing: I thought he managed the game. The moment wasn’t too big for him, you know what I’m saying. I mean, he was in total control. And when something good happened, bad happened, he knew exactly what happened, why it happened. Talking to his teammates, making adjustments on the sideline, just natural composure. Very, very good job in what he did and thought he played really well.”

It’s so early in Weigman’s career, but Fisher thinks he sees that extra spark in him that stars often have.

“I always talk about that “IT” factor, right. He’s got it. That’s what he does. I mean, like I say, it’s been one game, right. But at the same time he doesn’t practice. He has a feel for the game. Like I said, I’ve been very pleased with him, and knew he was gonna play well. I’ve been proud of him, as far I knew what he was going to do and how he’s going to do it. He’s practiced that way. Now it’s just starting to come out more and more and more But he feels the game, understands it.”

An extremely bright future ahead for the true freshman. Jimbo Fisher’s fall has been close to disaster, but discovering a cornerstone QB late in the year could be his ticket to building towards a more successful 2023.
