Jimbo Fisher had to make a tough call this time last week about Texas A&M’s quarterback spot. After struggling in the Aggie’s first two games, including their loss to Appalachian State, it was time to rediscuss Haynes King’s starting role over Max Johnson. That eventually led to Johnson taking over for their primetime matchup against Miami where he didn’t disappoint.

Fisher broke down Johnson’s performance after their win over the Hurricanes on Saturday. He said he’s now very assured in Johnson as their starter based on the plays and reads he made throughout.

“I’m very confident with him,” said Fisher. “I thought he played really nice. Can’t wait until I see the film to see. He got some pressures and he had some really good reads…I thought he played an outstanding game.”

Johnson finished with 10/20 passing for 140 yards and a touchdown plus seven rushes for 23 more yards. While the numbers don’t jump off the screen, it was all about the veteran presence that made his performance exceptional. Johnson saw significant college snaps at LSU in comparison to what Haynes King has seen in his career so far. Pairing that with his efficient play all came together to make a performance that Fisher was proud of.

“(Johnson) made the plays,” Fisher said. “He had a touchdown throw, had no turnovers. Managed the game well, the clock and snaps. Got plays in and out, controlled the line of scrimmage with his snap count. He did a nice job.”

This QB competition was a controversial one for Jimbo Fisher this fall. King has all the talent, but his lack of experience meant his floor wasn’t all that high yet. Meanwhile, you may not get crazy numbers from Johnson in this offense but, at the very least, you do know what you were going to get. That kind of stability is what A&M needed right now and should be what keeps Johnson in their QB1 spot for the foreseeable future.
