Mike Elko addresses Texas A&M QB decision between Marcel Reed, Conner Weigman
Trailing two scores in the second half, Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko elected to put Marcel Reed into the game in favor of Conner Weigman at the quarterback position.
This turned out to be a game-changing decision for the Aggies, as Reed went on to score three second-half touchdowns and led the Aggies to a 38-23 comeback win against an LSU team that many considered one of the hottest in the country coming in.
Despite his impressive performance, Elko wouldn’t commit to keeping Reed in as the Aggies’ full-time starter moving forward.
“Yeah, I think the possibility is there for a lot of things,” Elko told reporters on Monday. “I think we’re going to look at this week, figure out what we think the right thing is for us, what we think gives us the best chance to win moving forward. It’s probably too early in our minds to make that decision. Even if we did, we probably wouldn’t tell you right now anyway.
“But no, I think we just want to see how this week plays out, see what we think gives us the best shot to go into this environment and be successful, and then go forward from there.”

Reed finished with just two passing attempts, but those attempts went for 70 yards. He also took nine carries for 62 yards and the aforementioned three touchdowns — all of which came on the ground. Thanks to Reed’s strong performance, the win helped keep Texas A&M alone atop the SEC standings after improving 5-0 in conference play.
With teams like Texas, Tennessee and Georgia hot on Texas A&M’s heels in the SEC standings, every game is a must-win matchup at this point in the season.
Looking ahead, the Aggies will match up against South Carolina on the road during Week 10. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET and will air live on ABC and the ESPN app as they look to remain unbeaten in conference play.
