Texas A&M officially has its QB1 for the season opener against Sam Houston State. Haynes King will take the first snaps, according to TexAgs’ Billy Liucci.

The intense quarterback battle came down to King, Max Johnson and Conner Weigman, but ultimately King was able to gain the edge and earn the starting quarterback role out of fall camp. Last season, King threw for 300 yards before an injury paved the way for Zach Calzada to take over as QB1.

After playing the long game and waiting until nearly the end of fall training camp, head coach Jimbo Fisher wanted to see all three quarterbacks in live action, along with a multitude of other evaluating factors, before figuring out which player was best suited for the job. Now, the Aggies have their man.

More on the Texas A&M quarterback battle

King was initially the starter last season, but suffered an injury, which led Calzada to take the majority of the snaps before he headed to Auburn via the transfer portal. Then, Fisher hit the portal to bring in Johnson from LSU and landed a highly touted recruit in Weigman as part of its No. 1-ranked recruiting class, according to the On3 Consensus Team Recruiting Ranking.

Weigman was a five-star recruit and the No. 28 player in the nation from the class of 2022, according to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

As a senior, he racked up 34 touchdowns and piled up nearly 2,900 total yards for his high school. On3’s JD PicKell has called him, “the guy of the future in College Station,” if that tells you anything about the expectations that surround the true freshman within the Aggies program.
